Money raised for charities : £106,000

On Saturday 18th October 2008 Cheddar Male Choir appeared along with 17 other Choirs participating in the 2008 Festival of Male Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall.  This was a challenging concert and was a most enjoyable and auspicious occasion.

Future plans for 2009 include taking part in a Competition in Bournemouth and a Tour of Tuscany.

PEGGY NETCOTT

President 2000 - 2006

From the start Peggy involved herself fully in the life of the Choir and surprised many of us by turning up at rehearsals not just occasionally but regularly!  She supported the Choir at virtually every Concert during her term of office and was always evident as our President with her chain of office.  She was very proud of the Choir and its achievements, loved the music and the repartees, and gained so much pleasure from her involvement.  She helped considerably in liaising with Vice-Presidents and was instrumental in selling tickets on a regular basis.  We became so used to her presence at functions that any absence was a surprise and noticed by all.  Her loyalty, support and commitment to the Choir went beyond most people’s expectations.

It's strange that one recalls particular events.  I will always remember her Christmas bazaars!  Shortly after her appointment she announced that she was organizing a bazaar at Cheddar Methodist Church.  We were duly instructed to bring books, plants, jam, vegetables, anything at all saleable and there was an air of authority about her instructions akin to that of a headmistress!  Woe betide anyone who didn’t support the event!  I think we were all a bit sceptical at first but her efforts raised thousands of pounds for Choir funds over several events and made a significant difference.  I gained the impression that her garage/home was full of artefacts, books, bric-a-brac all collected methodically for such events.

In addition to her loyalty to the Choir, Peggy always wanted everything to be done “properly!”  She always supported Rick’s requests for a smart turnout and cast a searching eye over the front row (in particular) at Concerts.  Grey socks were noticed!  She also possessed a great sense of humour and enjoyed the jokes and the bonhomie that often pervades rehearsals and Concert preparation.  Until her recent illness she had an almost mischievous twinkle in her eye and I think she revelled in the thought that she was presiding over 65 of “her boys!”

Peggy was small of stature but she had a big heart and worked tirelessly to help the Choir move forward.  We will always remember her with affection and trust that her work will continue to bear fruit in the future.  We are grateful for her determination, her loyalty, her sense of humour and her unique style! May she rest in peace.
