Thirukkovil lies on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka and was the birthplace of Rev Sam.  The majority of the village is populated by Tamil speaking people.  They are humble people who are generally fishermen and farmers.  All seven thousand inhabitants were affected by the Asian Tsunami in 2004.  They lost over eight hundred people and over one thousand houses.  Every family has a story of loss on an unimaginable scale.  They have received very little outside help to rebuild their lives.  Their determination to bring life back to normal has given "samsproject" a sense of purpose.
